seo basics

SEO, or search engine optimisation (optimization in the US of course) is the holy grail of internet marketing. If you can get a top three listing in the free search engine results pages (SERPS) and you choose your keywords carefully, you are in for a lot of free visitors to your website.

There are a few basic things to know about SEO. Basics that anyone can do.

First off each and every page must have a unique title. That’s what you see in the SERPs and at the top of every web page you browse. You see if each page is titled the same then the search engines may see those as the same. I mean, if you have 1000 pages each called “welcome to abc limited” then even a human would have trouble thinking they are all unique.

Next off, structure your site well. Using a content management system like wordpress will help your thoughts. a) because they have categories (like this post is within “SEO”) and b) they have proper file names (like seo-basics.html)

What could be more simple?

So if you have all your titles the same and filenames from a product catalog that are 100 charaters in length and contain lots of random numbers and letters, then you need to change that - and quick.

Those are the basics of your “on page” seo - look out for off page factors.
