search engine optimisation tips

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is a term used by experts to improve your search engine rankings.

If you have a website then you know you need to be at least in the top 5 results in Google, Yahoo or MSN to get any visitors. Below this level and you’ll get hardly any at all.

Finding Keywords

The first thing you need to do is understand what phrases potential visitors to your site will key into the search engines to find your site. Look at the tools at www.digitalpoint.com (keyword suggestion) for help.

Start by keying in a really generic term such as “business” and see the related results. Then key in a term from the related results until you are sure this is the key phrase people will key in (next to these is the number of searches per month so you’ll get an idea of the competition you are facing).

Coding Your Web Pages

Put the key phrase into your &lt’TITLE> tag (your meta tags).

Also put the key phrase into your H1 tag (or the heading of the page - ensure these are both the same).

Then write your page ensuring you sprinkle this phrase throughout the page.

Ensure that each page you write for your website has different title tags and headings — each page should be unique and not have your company name as the beginning.

Get Links Into Your Site

By far the greatest way to move up the search engine results pages (SERPs) is to get links into your site from other sites.

You should attempt to get the text in the link as close as possible to the phrase you are targeting on each of your pages.

But ensure they are not 100% the same — mix them up a bit.
