Google Links Operator Expanded
Brand new from Google is even more data about who links to your website.
The Google links operator that anyone can use to see what links go to any site is rather outdated and only shows a selection of links. If you have a webmaster account (sign up top right hand corner of the google home page) you’ll be able to see exactly who links to your site and download the data to analyse.
This is information for you and I guess also that Google wants more webmasters to sign up to have an account to track who owns what websites.
The information is powerful and you can see which external sites link to your pages and how many times you yourself link to your own pages.
See Google’s webmaster blog at http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2007/02/discover-your-links.html and additionally Aaron has blogged about it here http://www.seobook.com/archives/002028.shtml
In addition to what Aaron suggests, you’ll also see just what pages you are getting links to. If they are all to your home page then you should start to diversify what pages people link to your site. ie: not just your home page but other important areas of your website. Articles and information within your site are just as important and worthy of external links - aren’t they ?
