Apple Launches iPhone
The iphone was launched yesterday by Apple and was greeted with a whopping 8% surge in their share price. The new iPhone has a single large screen and just one button - a “home” button.
On the screen you simply use your fingers to touch controls and move around the operating system and all that it offers - a bit like your mouse with your computer.
But of course it is really a combination of devices we already have :
- A mobile phone
- An iPod
- An organiser
The phone was always going to be the catalyst for anything new. We all have mobile phones and we always have them with us. So why not an organiser and all your tunes in an easy to use manner ?
The iphone was launched at Macworld by Apple president Steve Jobs. He said:
“Apple has been very fortunate that it has been able to introduce a few of these” hits, he said, referring to the introduction of the Mac in 1984 and the iPod in 2001. “We are advancing the state of the art in every aspect.”
Apple has sold more than 70 million iPods since they were introduced and consumers have bought more than 2 billion songs for about 99 cents each on iTunes. More than 220 television shows are also available on iTunes.
Shares in other so called “smart” phones plumeted on the news yesterday, including Blackberry. The operating system of iPhone is so different and so much better that it would appear this is the future.
Coupled with the “must have” nature of Apple’s products this is sure to be a best seller. It’ll be in the shops in the US this Spring and hopefully we’ll see it in the UK during October. Pricing in the US is $499 so expect that to be £499 in the UK.
