- Listen to Everyone - Many leaders tune out the concerns and issues of their employees to their detriment. If you want to demand respect in them, listen to their concerns and respond in kind.
- Communicate Positively - Don't just tell people what to do. Communicate with them in a positive manner. Think about everything you say and make sure it is worded in a way that is constructive and motivational. Negativity can quickly sink a team's morale and its willingness to work hard.
- Stand Back a Bit - While you'll need to choose your leadership style on your own, it is always important to respect the abilities and decision making of your team. Let them do things on their own when possible. Less oversight can often be a boon to productivity.
- Share the Burden - Don't take everything on your own shoulders. Leadership is about delegation and respect. Find group members and team leaders who can take over small tasks for you. The more people you involve in the process, the more respect you'll receive.
- Analyse Yourself in Terms of Your Team - Don't just think "I'm doing a great job". Look at how your team is doing. As a leader, it is your responsibility to create a good work environment that breeds productive, happy employees. If they are not getting their work done properly, what is it that you may be missing?
Leadership is a symbiotic process. No one can be the perfect leader every time they come to work each day. But, by listening to your team members, respecting their opinions, and working hard to encourage creativity while holding them responsible for their actions, you can develop the leadership skills you need to help yourself and your team succeed.
