The google adsense system can be a good way to monetorise your website.
Adsense are adverts from google that can be displayed on your website from advertisers that advertise through google. Each time someone clicks on an ad you are paid a percentage of the click that the advertiser has bid upon. This can vary greatly but if all things are equal it should be about 70% of what the advertiser has paid.
Improving click through rates (CTRs)
One element to concentrate on first is getting as many people to click on your ads. The best piece of advice is to test and test again. Google have provide a “heat map” that shows where people look on your website so these are the best areas to place ads. The other main tip is to blend your ads with the rest of the site, so, they don’t look like ads. So if your text is black, have your ad text as black. If your link text is blue then have your ad text as blue. This is simple stuff but so many people don’t do this and it is obvious it’s an ad.
Additionally you can put images next to your ads. A lot of folks do this but now you need to ensure that there are boxes either around the ads or the pictures. If at all unsure check with google first - they will have a look at your site and let your know if the adsense on your site is acceptable. Keep the email that google provide you.
Improving your cost per click
The main way to improve is to check your keywords. Some keywords will only pay 0.01cents per click - others pay $20. Now obviously the $20 clicks have huge competition and you may not get ranked for people to come to your site but good keyword research is vital for you to make money.
Additionally, the click rates are based on your whole adsense account - so if you have several websites and some have thousands of impressions and no clicks this will affect the rest of your account by something google terms as smart pricing. If you have underperforming sites take them off. You’ll see the CPC increase rapidly.
Be patient
Some riches may not happen overnight so be patient. Google may wait a while if you have a new account to see how your website is performing. Put ads on your site and wait and see (always test for the CTRs as mentioned above) but the CPC may be low when you start. Once you have a history this should start to increase.
